A study conducted by Cornell University has focused on the impact of psychedelics on these brain network configurations, and the energy needed for the brain to transition between these different states. According to the results of the study, it appears that psychedelics might be able to lower the energy threshold that is required for the brain to make these transitions. This is an important finding, as it suggests that psychedelics could have a profound impact on our conscious experience by making it easier for the brain to shift into different configurations.

According to the theory of “network control,” the brain continually switches between various states, such as the dorsal attention network (DAT) and the default mode network (DMN). These shifts in brain states are believed to play a crucial role in consciousness and cognitive functioning.

Brain network configurations are thought to correspond to certain mental states, like sleep and wakefulness, as suggested by neuroscientists Tononi, Gervasoni, and Northoff. However, there is a lack of consensus in the scientific community regarding this idea, making it a subject of ongoing research and investigation.

It’s worth considering the concept of brain entropy, which refers to the number of different brain states the brain can access. According to the Entropic Brain Theory developed by Professor Carhart-Harris at Imperial College London, when the brain is exposed to high levels of entropy, it can lead to higher-quality conscious states known as “primary brain states.” In more typical brain states, such as waking consciousness, entropy is often suppressed by certain dominant brain states, like the Default Mode Network (DMN). However, when entropy increases, these dominant states tend to fade, making room for the primary brain states. Thus, changes in brain entropy can result in higher levels of consciousness.

So what’s the connection to psychedelics?

Of particular interest in the field of brain entropy is the impact of psychedelics, as they seem to increase brain entropy and lead to deeper, more immersive conscious states. This is what’s observed in Professor Carhart-Harris’ REBUS model, or “Relaxed Belief Under Psychedelics.” This model explains the beneficial effects that psychedelics can have on individuals struggling with mental health disorders by disrupting the beliefs and attitudes at the core of the disorder.

What does this study suggest?

The study of serotonergic psychedelics like LSD and psilocybin and their effects on the brain has recently been advanced through research conducted by Cornell University. The study administered LSD and psilocybin to 15 and 9 individuals respectively and used neuroimaging techniques such as PET and fMRI to map the 5HT2A serotonin receptors, which are the main proteins responsible for the effects of these substances on consciousness and perception.

The results of this study showed that psychedelics have the potential to increase brain entropy by lowering the energy required for brain networks to shift to different configurations. In other words, these substances make it easier for the brain to move into new states of consciousness by reducing the energy needed to transition between different brain states. This is significant because, in a typical waking state, the brain’s entropy tends to be suppressed, making it difficult to access new states of consciousness. However, psychedelics appear to break down these barriers and enhance brain entropy, leading to deeper and richer conscious experiences.

These results shed light on the possibility of modulating the brain in psychiatric disorders and provide a deeper insight into the therapeutic effects of psychedelics on the brain. This highlights the importance of continued research and support for these potentially transformative substances.
